  • Whole octopus
  • garlic
  • onion
  • bay leaves
  • black peppercorns
  • salt
  • avocado
  • lemon
  • lime, for serving
  • Avocado smashed with salt and lime juice, for serving
  • fresh cilantro, for serving
  • pickled red onion, for serving
  • salsa, for serving
  • warmed corn tortillas, for serving

How to make it

Dip the whole octopus in a pot of boiling water a few times until the tentacles curl up. Submerge the octopus in the water and add in garlic, onion, salt, black peppercorns, and bay leaves. Cover and simmer for 1 hour.

Remove the cooked octopus to a wire rack and let rest for 10 minutes. Then cut off all the tentacles. Grill over hot coals until a char is formed on both sides. Optionally you can sear in a pan with oil. Squeeze some lemon juice over as you’re cooking it.

To serve spread some of the smashed avocado over a tortilla. Place in some of the octopus and add a pinch of salt. Drizzle over some salsa. Top with pickled onion and fresh cilantro. Squeeze a little lime juice over. Hope you enjoy!
