What will you need?
- Whole octopus
- garlic
- onion
- bay leaves
- black peppercorns
- salt
- avocado
- lemon
- lime, for serving
- Avocado smashed with salt and lime juice, for serving
- fresh cilantro, for serving
- pickled red onion, for serving
- salsa, for serving
- warmed corn tortillas, for serving
How to make it
Dip the whole octopus in a pot of boiling water a few times until the tentacles curl up. Submerge the octopus in the water and add in garlic, onion, salt, black peppercorns, and bay leaves. Cover and simmer for 1 hour.
Remove the cooked octopus to a wire rack and let rest for 10 minutes. Then cut off all the tentacles. Grill over hot coals until a char is formed on both sides. Optionally you can sear in a pan with oil. Squeeze some lemon juice over as you’re cooking it.

To serve spread some of the smashed avocado over a tortilla. Place in some of the octopus and add a pinch of salt. Drizzle over some salsa. Top with pickled onion and fresh cilantro. Squeeze a little lime juice over. Hope you enjoy!
